Their treatment of women is foreign and offensive to our way of thinking. However, when you understand the status of women at the time, the meaning of the scriptural passage becomes clear, even though it is still offensive to us. Scripture 1 Cor 11:7-12
3 But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the wife is her husband; and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head; for she is equal to her whose head is shaven. 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also cut off her hair; but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her cover her head. 7 For a man indeed ought not cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of the man. 8 For the man was not created from the woman; but the woman was created from the man.9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to be modest and cover her head as a mark of respect to the angels.
